I’ve come to the conclusion that I am at the age in which a lot of my favorite celebrities/actors will pass away, it really hit me when Robin Williams passed.

I think you mean first Lemmy, then Bowie, now Rickman. That's the three. By the way Hitchikers Guide is one of my all time favourite movies and books series. I have Marvin as my front wallpaper on my phone.

Me, too. And last year’s death of Leonard Nimoy hit me especially hard, since I am both a huge fan of Star Trek and of science fiction. Nimoy’s Spock has always been, to me, one of the best representations of what Star Trek aims to be.

He seems to have been a genuinely nice person as well. Coincidentally, it’s not long ago I (re)watched this episode of QI where they talk about him:

Ahhhh Leonard Nimoy too I remember how sad that was! Getting old sucks!! That’s why I keep telling the youth here to just enjoy their youth instead of crying and complaining about every little petty thing that happens to them in Middle School/High School. When your old you have a shitload of responsibilities and everyone starts dying :(

Spoiler: Cancer Kills Snape.

I’m having trouble thinking of a role where he wasn’t one of my favorite characters in the movie. Even as a bad guy he played the part well enough that you truly liked or disliked his antics.

I have seldom laughed harder than during his delivery of one-liners and sarcasm in Dogma, he was ridiculously good at mumbling on screen.

It’s left me rather sad, though I imagine I won’t be really upset until Gary Oldman is gone. Seems like we’re losing brilliant character actors every day, and this past two weeks have had a huge toll on celebrities in general. Rickman, Bowie, Lemmy, my aunt... well I guess she wasn’t a celebrity. Still, she was a very sweet lady, and that tends to magnify all the deaths in the news, having something close as a complement.

Bowie’s easily my favorite musician/singer/performer. I’ve had his music on non-stop rotation since Monday. Watched Labyrinth last night and now will be adding Hitchhiker’s and Galaxy Quest to that list. Damn.

Rest in peace, fellas.

She had been in bad health for a very long time, surviving Hep C and breast cancer, and living with diabetes, so combine that with approaching 80 and not always eating right and catching pneumonia last week... it was certainly sad, but not as much of a shock as it might have been. Several close calls these past several years. She spent a very nice Christmas and Thanksgiving with us last year, which I’m happy to have had with her.

Anyway, this is the Alan Rickman thread. I’m assuming by your lead picture that’s your nomination for Most Overlooked Alan Rickman Role? Can’t say I really disagree - he had a unique talent for seeming weighed down by all the world, which was good in Galaxy Quest and even better in H2G2, some weaknesses in that film notwithstanding.

First LEMMY \m/ , then the great David Bowie, then the ultra rad Alan Rickman. The Brits are not having a good couple of weeks with their rad peeps :’(

Hey, don’t apologize for sharing your story. You’re right that a well-known death can cause us to reflect on our own lives and loved ones. I thank you for sharing the story of your aunt, and I’m glad you were able to spend a good holiday with her.

My last remaining grandparent, my dad’s mom, died a week before Christmas. She was one helluva woman — raised 15 kids (yes, you read that right), all of whom have grown up to be successful business people in one form or another. She’d start her day at 4:30 in the morning in order to be able to make enough tortillas for the family’s breakfast and sack lunches. She made over 130 tortillas a day in order to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. Illiterate, she taught herself to read when she became a Christian as an adult and wanted to read the bible. Uneducated, she became a savvy businesswoman and bookkeeper as she learned to manage her husband’s and children’s finances as they worked as migrant farm workers.

Anyway, yes, I loved Rickman’s character in Hitchhiker’s Guide. It was the best part of the movie, IMO. I haven’t seen a movie he’s in where his acting wasn’t stellar. I’ll miss him and his iconic voice.

Bowie and Rickman were both 69. I’m starting to dislike that number now.

Your grandma sounds like a hell of a lady. Both of mine raised “only” six each, but I’ve got an aunt with eleven (IIRC) who was also largely her family’s head of order. Most of hers are grown.

My mom’s mother is no longer with us as of about ten years ago - she was 97. That leaves only my 89 (I think) year old dad’s mom, who just within the past few weeks was told she needed to stop walking. I think she’ll be rebelling against that for a while yet. It was at her house that my mom’s sister passed away, but she took it quite well, due that she ran a tuberculosis clinic for years in the far east and (to put it bluntly) has had dramatic deaths on her watch.

Neither granddad overlapped with my span on this earth - one died when my mom was a teen, and the other died shortly before I was born.

I was just checking Alan Rickman’s filmography, and this popped out at me:

To be honest, this is a lot sadder than Bowie for me. Never listened to his music or saw his movies. Hans Gruber on the other hand.
